Subway Surfers Showdown Brings Back Competitive Multiplayer… Permanently
SYBO, the team behind the hugely popular endless runner mobile game Subway Surfers, has announced the launch of Showdown – a competitive multiplayer mode. The new mode goes live today and sees up to six players competing on the same run.
The launch coincides with the release of the latest World Tour season, Easter Island. SYBO previously collaborated with Brawl Stars to offer a time-limited multiplayer mode in September 2025.
SYBO CEO Mathias Gredal Nørvig said: “Our community has been asking for a multiplayer mode, and after seeing the incredible response to the limited-time version during our collaboration with Brawl Stars, we knew it was time to bring a permanent competitive experience to the game.
“Showdown adds an entirely new layer of excitement to Subway Surfers while preserving the fast-paced gameplay our players know and love.”
Subway Surfers Showdown Details
Showdown pits up to six players against one another on the same run. As well as power-ups that improve the player’s character, some hamper competitors’ progression. Finishing first grants rewards, giving some replayability. Subway Surfers has long been a predominantly single-player game. Something to pick up, spend a few minutes on, and put down. It does have some minor competitive elements, thanks to community and even friends’ leaderboards. But Subway Surfers Showdown opens that competition up. It has the potential to become a competitive eSports title, although it has come too late for EWC 2026.
Subway Surfers World Tour: Easter Island
The new mode is being introduced alongside the latest World Tour season. Easter Ireland adds Sprinkle and Bunny Betty surfers and new boards, Pixel Perfect, Sunny Side Up, and Buzz BNY. It is the 181st instalment of the World Tour.
Subway Surfers is an icon of the mobile gaming genre. It launched more than a decade ago in 2012 and has been downloaded more than 4 billion times.
Its popularity has led to an Apple-specific spin-off, Subway Surfers Tag, as well as an animated series chronicling the adventures of Jake, Tricky, and the rest.
Earlier this year, SYBO launched the sequel, Subway Surfers City, offering improved graphics, new moves, and interactive hazards. Within the first five days, City was rumoured to have been downloaded 5 million times and has gone on to enjoy more than 12 million installs in its first month.
However, while it does offer community-driven competition via leaderboards, it does not yet include Showdown. Depending on its popularity in the main game, that may follow in the future.
