Overwatch Smashes Steam Player Record After Season 1 Update
Overwatch has smashed its Steam player record after its most recent update. Blizzard’s hero shooter registered a peak of more than 165,000 players on February 1 – more than double the 65,000 registered on the game’s Steam launch.
The Reign Of Talon Begins
Conquest added narrative arcs, starting with Season 1: Reign of Talon – Conquest. It also improved the user interface, made graphical improvements, balanced some heroes and weapons, and added five new heroes with a promise of five more to follow by the end of the year. It also removed the number 2 from its title.
The significant changes have helped the eSports title put a somewhat shaky four-year recent history behind it.
The game has also posted a Mixed overall rating from 7,649 reviews, compared to a Mostly Negative from 140,250 all-time reviews.
The Reign of Talon represents the first story arc introduced to the game, with a new arc every year. Each arc will consist of around 6 seasons, with new seasonal content launched roughly every 9 weeks. Every season will have its own themed battle pass, including 80 cosmetic items.
Overwatch Steam Player Number Increase
The update also added five new heroes and saw some decent UI and graphical improvements. There will be five further seasons added to this arc. Each one will introduce a new hero. Three new maps will also be released over the year. Nintendo players will also be pleased to hear that season 2, which should launch in April, will see Overwatch launch on Switch 2.
Even before the release, Overwatch Steam player count saw a boost. The title saw a high of 65,000 players when it launched on the platform in August 2023. From April 2024, it saw a steady player figure between 40,000 and 60,000 with the occasional outlier.
On February 8, 2 days before the update, it hit nearly 70,000, but February 10 saw an impressive 165,000 players.
At the time of writing, there are 120,000 players in the game. It sits 9th in the overall Steam player table, ahead of Marvel Rivals, Deadlock, and Apex Legends. While its current count sits slightly below that of PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS, it has been trending higher than the Battle Royale in the past day or so.
