Vitality And Spirit Both In Action In Busy Day For CS2 Esports
Two of the best Counter-Strike 2 esports teams are in action today, albeit nearly 7,000 miles apart. Vitality, which enters every competition as the favourite, is playing on US soil, in the IEM Atlanta quarterfinal.
Meanwhile, in Kazakhstan, Spirit embarks on its own quarterfinal matchup as part of the Astana 2026 playoff stages. Both are expected to progress to the next stages, although their opposition teams are capable of causing upsets.
IEM Atlanta
A scheduling conflict means we have two of the most significant CS2 tournaments happening at once. Visa issues, travel distances, an increased prize pot, and a desire to avoid Vitality mean most of the top-ten teams are participating in the PGL event.
But IEM Atlanta still has a $1m prize pool and makes up part of the ESL Grand Slam series, which offers an additional incentive. Vitality is especially keen on ESL tournaments, having won back-to-back Slams, so is present in Atlanta.
Vitality In The Quarter Finals
Despite losing a match in the group stages, Vitality benefited from the double-elimination format to make the playoffs. BetBoom Team, Vitality’s conquerors, received a bye through to Saturday’s semifinals thanks to their clean sweep performance.
To reach the same stage, Vitality will first have to overcome NAVI.
NAVI enjoyed a clean 2-0 victory over Passion UA before a closer 2-1 win against GamerLegion, but was held back by a 2-1 loss to Legacy, who now go straight to the semis.
Natus Vincere has been there or thereabouts in recent tournaments, finishing 2nd at BLAST Rivals Spring 2026 in May and BLAST Open Spring.
They went one better in March’s ESL Pro League Season 23.
The two teams are fairly evenly matched in head-to-head all-time results, with Vitality just edging out their Ukrainian opponents 18-15. However, most of NAVI’s victories came several years ago, and there has been a clear changing of the guard over the past three or four years.
Vitality has won the last seven match-ups, and you have to go back to October 2024 for the last time NAVI emerged victorious.
IEM Cologne, in August 2024, was the last time the French team took a map in a major event. Considering Vitality’s recent form, an upset in Atlanta seems unlikely. The winner will face BetBoom Team in the semifinal.
Other Atlanta Matches
In the tournament’s other quarter final, paiN takes on GL. Snow performed particularly well in the Brazilian team’s 2-0 victory over FaZe Clan, ending with a 1.47 rating. They also beat FUT Esports 2-1 before succumbing to BetBoom Team’s relentless march, losing 2-1 in the final group game. GamerLegion took on SINNERS in their first group match, winning 2-1, before a 2-1 loss to NAVI. But they completed a 2-0 win over Astralis in the lower bracket to make it to the playoffs.
GL looks the most likely to progress, and has the bookmakers’ backing, but there is the possibility of an upset here. A semifinal against Legacy awaits the winner.
PGL Astana
PGL increased the prize pool for this year’s Astana tournament, from $1m to $1.6m. That’s $600,000 more than on offer in the US.
That, coupled with visa difficulties when registering for Atlanta, means Astana has attracted a wealth of big names, with six of the top ten ranked teams making the journey.
Spirit won last year’s event, and their path to victory this time around is Vitality-free.
They came through the group stages almost completely unscathed, losing just a single game to FURIA in their last match. Today, they face G2, who needed five matches to qualify for the playoffs, losing to MOUZ and The Mongolz.
Wins against collegiate team Fisher College and Monte went as expected, and they emerged 2-1 victors over PARIVISION. However, Spirit likely has too much for G2.
Other Astana Matches
In the other QFs, MOUZ takes on Aurora, having already beaten them 2-0 in the group stages. A similar result seems the most likely outcome.
Later in the day, 9z plays magic. 9z has enjoyed a very strong tournament, having been relatively untested at this level previously but dominating in local tournaments.
They beat PARIVISION, Falcons, and MOUZ in their group games.
Magic needed five games to reach the playoffs. But having lost their opening games to The MongolZ and Monte, they will be on a high from turning their form around. They beat K27, HEROIC, and Gentle Mates to get to the latter stages.
Even considering that bounce, though, 9z looks the most likely to progress, although their inexperience at global events may come into play.
The other final quarter final pits the Falcons against FURIA.
FURIA won 3 of their 4 group games, only losing to Spirit, while the Falcons’ only loss came against 9z.
The two look evenly matched, but the Falcons appear to just about have the edge on recent showings.
