Redsec Getting Rapid Royale Mode And Prox Chat Update
Battlefield Redsec’s launch was far from successful. It had game-crashing bugs, lacked some fairly basic functionality, and existing Battlefield players disliked its integration into the existing ecosystem. As a result, the game has mixed to negative Steam reviews and has never really taken off. EA even had to cancel most of the game’s planned esports tournaments.
Despite its struggles, EA has stuck with Redsec. It has seen several rebalances and, since season 3, has offered a Solos mode. Open and Elite Series esports tournaments are finally set to go ahead starting later this month and Season 5 is bringing a faster-paced game mode, Rapid Royale, and proximity chat.
Esports Incoming
EA was forced to cancel most of its early esports plans. The game has had Cash Cups, weekly competitive tournaments, since season 1. But, game-breaking bugs forced the company to cancel other planned competitions.
They have announced that Open and Elite Series tournaments will proceed, starting this month. We’ve covered the new tournaments in greater detail in another post, but, in short Open tournaments give amateur players a chance to progress to big-money Elite tournaments.
Esports ecosystems can help save games and retain player bases. Counter Strike and Super Smash Bros likely wouldn’t be as popular now if they didn’t have competitive competitions. But, despite being featured at the World Cup, Redsec’s main competition, Warzone, hasn’t exactly set the competitive gaming world alight.
Game Improvements
And, no matter how well organised an esports ecosystem is, if the base game itself is lacking, global tournaments won’t save the game. EA has already responded to some of the game’s early criticism.
The lack of a Solo mode wasn’t a popular choice, so Solos came to season 3 after testing. Large empty maps also came in for criticism, and EA has been adding POIs to maps to help remedy this problem.
Rapid Royale Game Mode
Season 5 is bringing further changes that could help the game’s popularity. Rapid Royale is basically the same as Warzone’s Resurgence mode. The new game mode will only be available on smaller maps so, while games will have smaller player counts, they will be faster paced. This faster pacing will be further augmented by faster moving circles.
Prox Chat
Even before that, we’re going to get another highly requested addition – proximity chat. Prox chat is being introduced in Season 4 – Tidal Strike, coming on September 15.
Will It Matter?
EA are clearly listening to player issues. And, they continue to take some of the better features of Warzone and adapting them (slightly) to Redsec. It’s quite obvious, though, they aren’t going to separate Redsec from Battlefield 6. It is possible for non-BF6 gamers to install the free-to-play Battle Royale title, but BF6 players still feel forced to play Redsec.
