Digimon Story: Time Stranger Out Now On Nintendo Switch And Switch 2

Bandai Namco has announced the launch of Digimon Story: Time Stranger on the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. The title launched on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on October 3, 2025.

Time Stranger is the fastest selling game in the Digimon franchise, racking up 1 million sales in its first two months. It enjoyed critical success on launch, and it has become a leading light in the monster-taming JRPG genre.

Time Stranger Gameplay

The turn-based JRPG takes players to both human and digital worlds and includes more than 450 Digimon, as well as an expansive stat customization system. Digimon games have long been enjoyed for their training features. And that’s an area that Time Stranger stands out once again.

But, this time around, reviewers have also largely heaped praise on the battle system, albeit with some criticism. Digimon battling suffers for being a little shallow. If you can figure out the enemy’s weakness, and then apply the appropriate elemental damage, you’re pretty much guaranteed a win.

Despite being a little one dimensional, the battling is fun and you do enjoy a sense of achievement with battle victories.

The storyline is decent enough, if a little bit meh. But, the game really excels in its application of Digivolving. You have to reach specific requirements to digivolve, and doing so passes on the Digimon’s stats.

The game is going to appeal to old-school Digimonners. It does have enough for new players, too, but it’s unlikely to convert new players to the franchise.

Other Digimon Stuff

At the same time as the Switch launch, Bandai Namco has also announced a free update to the game on existing platforms. And mobile players don’t have to miss out, either, with Digimon Up out on July 15.

Digimon Story: Time Stranger isn’t the first Digimon to hit Switch. Digimon World: Next Order International Edition launched on PlayStation 4 in 2017 and came out on Switch in 2023. Cyber Sleuth, widely considered the rebirth of the Digimon video game franchise, came to Switch in 2019, along with Cyber Sleuth – Hacker’s Memory.
