Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game Gets First Major Update

Gameplay Group International (GGI) has announced the launch of the first major update for Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game. However, it’s only a major update in name. Players had been calling for features like ranked play, lobbies, and spectator support. None of these were forthcoming, but the patch does iron out some identified issues.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game launched digitally on July 23 on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Switch.

It is slated for Xbox Series X|S launch in September and will come to Switch 2 in October. A physical release on all platforms will follow.

“Major” Update

In the meantime, GGI has announced the game’s first update. The patch brings the Samurai Appa support-character skin and offers keyboard remapping on the Steam platform, where users will also be able to enjoy Deluxe Edition colours. There are a bunch of bug fixes and improvements, too.

The updates are available to PlayStation and Steam users, but not for Switch players. Devs have said a Switch update is on its way, while they are “working with Microsoft to resolve the single issue holding up launch.”

And, that’s it. Although GGI has promised ranked matchmaking is on its way in a later update.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game Esports

Despite having launched less than a month ago, and still not being available on all platforms or as a physical copy, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game has already featured or is set to feature in a handful of smaller esports tournaments.

It was part of the VSFighting XIV Side Tournaments in Birmingham, at the end of July. It will also feature at CEO 2026 this month. Avatar Legends still has a long way to go to compete with the likes of Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8, both of which featured in this year’s Esports World Cup.

But the game released to generally positive reviews. Reviewers praised its 2D art style reminiscent of the original cartoon, as well as slick fighting action. However, the story mode has been criticised for being lacklustre. Players can choose from a roster of 12 characters.

Each character comes with a choice of three support characters. Supports don’t jump in to provide active assists, like in DCKO or Mortal Kombat, but provide passive abilities and change up the main character’s moves. Catch more on the official trailer, here:
