PGL Astana Hits 1.2m Viewer Peak But IEM Atlanta Suffers

Last week’s PGL Astana finished with Spirit dominating the final against Falcons. Their 3-0 win gave the Serbian team its first CS2 trophy of the year. It also attracted a peak figure of 1,169,121 viewers, during the final, and a tournament average of 295,464.

It became the most popular non-major CS2 tournament and the most popular tournament ever hosted in Kazakhstan.

While it was Team Spirit that took the trophy, Team Falcons attracted the most interest, with 4 of the top 5 matches featuring the team from Saudi Arabia.

The Tournament

This year, Astana was held on the same week as IEM Atlanta. However, PGL’s $1.6m prize pool, coupled with visa difficulties for teams hoping to compete in Atlanta, meant the Kazakhstani tournament attracted the most talent.

While the world number 1 team, Team Vitality, jetted off to the US, six of the top ten teams in the world chose Astana. Spirit was always fancied for the event, having won last year’s tournaments and only really struggling when they came up against Vitality. And, so it proved. Donk and his teammates dropped just one map across the whole tournament to walk away victorious.

PGL Astana 2026 Viewers

But, despite them being the favourites to win, they weren’t the favourites with viewers. According to Esports Charts figures, it was the Falcons who attracted the most eyes.

The final was the most popular match with just under 1.2 million viewers, closely followed by Team Falcons’ match against FURIA on day 1 of the playoffs.

That matchup attracted nearly 1.1 million spectators. Other popular matches included Sprit vs FURIA (700,000), MongolZ vs Falcons (500,000), and Falcons vs magic (500,000).

Its peak viewer figure puts Astana slightly ahead of this year’s IRM Rio. It is the second most viewed tournament of the year, behind IEM Krakow, which drew nearly 1.4 million pairs of eyes.

This is only the second PGL Astana event held. Last year, the tournament saw just over 900,000 peak viewers, so this year’s event was a major success.

IEM Atlanta Suffers

Astana’s success potentially cost IEM Atlanta, too. The two events were held on the same week, although matches rarely coincided due to time differences.

But, while PGL enjoyed a boost in its figures, Atlanta suffered a significant dip. With a peak of just 631,000 and an average of 220,000, viewer numbers were down 40% compared to IEM Dallas 2025.

With the majority of the world’s top teams competing in Astana, and favourites Atlanta being eliminated in the quarterfinals, interest clearly waned.

Next Up, Cologne

Next up, all eyes turn to Cologne. Last year’s corresponding event racked up 35 million viewing hours, making it the third most popular event of the year. It attracted 1.24 million peak viewers.

This year, 32 teams are lining up for the $1.25m prize pool. Nine of the current top ten teams will be competing, although FaZe Clan has failed to qualify for the tournament.

The event starts on June 2 and runs right through to June 21, and this year sees Cologne’s return as a Counter-Strike major. The addition of an extra day of competition also means viewer figures are likely to ramp up higher.
