Ubisoft Announces Closure Of Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles NFT Game
Studio Ubisoft has announced the upcoming full closure of Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles. Champions Tactics launched as an NFT turn-based strategy game in 2024. But, it never really took off. A few months ago, they removed blockchain functionality and attempted to breathe fresh life into the game with a non-blockchain Steam launch. It didn’t help.
Early Promise
Blockchain and NFT games were heralded by some groups as the next evolution of gaming. It promised a lot. Player ownership of in-game assets – assets that are transferrable from one game to another and that could be bought and sold on third-party marketplaces.
But, while there was a rush of investment and development in the early days, it didn’t last. Research from Caladan shows that more than 90% of blockchain games have fallen by the wayside.
The majority of blockchain games concentrated on the financial speculation of NFTs. Gameplay was mid, at best. Non-existent in most cases. And a lot of people are extremely sceptical of low-cap memecoins and NFTs. When AI came along and took the attention of investors, it was GameFi apps that suffered.
New games do crop up occasionally, but they struggle to make any kind of impact.
Ubisoft Blockchain Gaming
There was some slight hope that Ubisoft would be different. But, surely, the studio responsible for games like Assassin’s Creed, Rainbow Six Siege, and Far Cry would be able to inject enjoyable gameplay into its NFT titles?
Ubisoft launched the Ubisoft Quartz platform in 2021. It “boasted” thousands of cosmetic NFTs featuring the studio’s aforementioned hits.
In 2024, it launched two NFT games – Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles and Captain Laserhawk: the G.A.M.E. – and followed this up with Might & Magic Fates in 2025.
Ubisoft nailed its colours to the NFT mast. But, it hasn’t really worked out.
Quartz effectively closed down in April 2022, just four months after launch. Captain Laserhawk was shuttered at the end of June this year.
Champions Tactics Closure
And, having already removed blockchain functionality from Champions Tactics, the developer has announced its impending closure.
Players have until October 30 to enjoy the game. Considering it has a current player count of 0, according to SteamDB, they could realistically shut it down now. Nobody would notice.
Considering the developer has been a strong proponent of web3 gaming in the past, even in the face of massive public criticism, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see them try again later down the line. But, for now, the closure of Champions Tactics means Ubisoft has no more blockchain irons in the fire.
